Naini Lake
- The lake is the centrepiece of the town, surrounded by hills on three sides. Boating here, in rowboats and paddleboats, is the most popular activity in Nainital. Boats are available through the day. Early mornings on the water are calm and worth an early start before the crowds build.
Snow View Point
- At 2,270 metres, Snow View Point offers clear sightlines to Himalayan peaks, including Nanda Devi on good days. A ropeway from Kulri Bazaar reaches the viewpoint, making the trip easy for all age groups.
Naina Devi Temple
- Located at the northern tip of the lake, this is one of the significant Shakti temples in the Kumaon region. It draws pilgrims and tourists year-round.
Eco Cave Gardens
- A network of interconnected rock caves with wildlife-themed structures inside. A good stop for families travelling with children.
Tiffin Top (Dorothy's Seat)
- A short trek from town reaches this viewpoint at 2,292 metres. Wide views across the Kumaon hills. A quieter spot compared to the busy lakefront.
Bhimtal
- About 22 km from Nainital, Bhimtal has its own lake and an island aquarium at its centre. Fewer crowds and a slower pace than the main town. Worth a half-day trip if time allows.
Things to Do in Nainital
Go Boating on Naini Lake:
Rowboats and paddleboats are available through the day at the lakefront. Early mornings are the best time as the water is calm, the hills are clear, and the crowd has not yet built up
Take the Ropeway to Snow View Point:
The ropeway from Kulri Bazaar reaches Snow View Point at 2,270 metres. On a clear day, the Himalayan peaks, including Nanda Devi, are visible from the top. The ride itself takes only a few minutes and is suited for all age groups.
Trek to Tiffin Top or Cheena Peak:
Both are short treks from the town and offer wide views across the Kumaon hills. Tiffin Top, also called Dorothy's Seat, is quieter than the busy lakefront. Cheena Peak is higher and a longer climb. Either makes for a good half-day out.
Shop at the Tibetan Market and Mall Road:
The Tibetan Market near the bus stand has woollens, jewellery, and handicrafts at fair prices. Mall Road carries the usual resort-town shops but is worth walking at least once, particularly in the evening when the lake lights up, and the promenade fills.
Take a Day Trip to Bhimtal or Sattal:
Bhimtal is around 22 km from Nainital and has its own lake with an island aquarium at the centre. Sattal, a cluster of seven interconnected lakes, is quieter and draws birdwatchers. Both are less crowded than Nainital and offer a different pace for a morning or afternoon out.
